BREAKING: The FDA Is Finally Updating Baby Formula Guidelines After 25 Years — Here’s What Parents Need to Know

For the first time since 1998, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is launching a full-scale review and update of the nutrient requirements for infant formula. This long-overdue move, dubbed “Operation Stork Speed,” comes on the heels of growing concerns from parents and pediatric experts alike about formula safety, nutrition, and transparency.

Always consult with your pediatrician, healthcare provider, or a licensed medical professional before making decisions about infant feeding or switching formulas.

What’s Changing With Operation Stork Speed?

The FDA has announced several key initiatives as part of this historic review:

  • Comprehensive nutrient update — This will be the first major revision of infant formula nutrient standards since 1998. Expect changes that reflect current science and health needs.
  • 🧪 Increased testing for heavy metals — More rigorous checks for contaminants like arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium in formulas.
  • 🌍 Extension of the personal importation policy — Meaning parents will still be able to access European and other foreign formulas.
  • 📦 Clearer labeling — The FDA plans to work with companies to improve ingredient transparency and simplify what’s on the label.
  • 🧠 Collaboration with the NIH — To close research gaps and better understand both short- and long-term health effects of formula feeding.

These updates aim to create safer, cleaner, and more trustworthy options for parents who choose or need to use formula.

What Should You Look for in a Safer Baby Formula?

While we await the FDA’s updated regulations, there are things parents can do right now to choose higher-quality formulas.

Look for formulas with:

  • 🍼 100% lactose as the carbohydrate source
(Avoid added sugars like corn syrup, glucose, maltodextrin, etc.)
  • 🌱 Non-GMO and USDA Organic certification
  • 🐄 Milk from grass-fed cows when available
  • 🧬 A2 casein protein for sensitive tummies – easier digestion, especially for sensitive babies

Formula Brand Breakdown: Good, Better, Best

Not all formulas are created equal. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate the options:

✅ Good Formula Brands

These use skim milk and have solid ingredients.

🆙 Better Formula Brands

These use whole milk, which more closely resembles breast milk fat content.

⭐️ Best Formula Brands

These go above and beyond—using whole milk and no seed oils, which many parents aim to avoid.

FAQ about serenity’s toddler formula:

This product is not an infant formula so we are not allowed to recommend this product for infants.  Our Toddler Formula contains the required FDA nutrients for infant formula, however, it has not yet gone through the FDA evaluation process that is required for infant formula.  So until then, we can only recommend our Grass Fed A2 Whole Milk Toddler Formula for children ages 12 months and up, or as directed by a health professional.

Final Thoughts

This move by the FDA is a long time coming—and a huge win for parents, babies, and public health. While regulatory changes may take time to fully roll out, you can start making better-informed decisions about formula today by prioritizing ingredients and brand transparency.

As always, talk to your pediatrician before switching or introducing any new formula.
