Back-to-school season is busy enough without spending hours reading every ingredient label at Target. The good news is that Target has seriously stepped up its selection of convenient options made with better ingredients.
These finds make it easier to build balanced breakfasts, school lunches and after-school snacks your kids will actually eat. It does not have to be all or nothing. A few simple swaps can add up to a big difference over time!

Availability can vary by location, so check your Target app before making the trip.

Protein-Rich Drinks and Milk
1. Pioneer Pastures A2 Protein Shakes
Pioneer Pastures protein shakes are one of my favorite newer Target finds. Each shelf-stable shake provides 30 grams of protein from ultra-filtered A2 milk, with no added sugar or seed oils. They are also lactose-free.
The shelf-stable packaging makes them easy to keep in the pantry, throw in a bag for sports or grab when you need a quick option on a busy morning. Because 30 grams is a substantial amount of protein, these may make the most sense for older kids, teens or busy parents depending on individual needs.
Look for chocolate, vanilla and strawberries-and-cream flavors at select Target locations.
2. Pioneer Pastures Ultra-Filtered A2 Milk
For cereal, smoothies or a drink with breakfast, Pioneer Pastures milk is another easy protein upgrade. Its whole milk has 14 grams of protein per serving and 50% less sugar than regular milk. It is ultra-filtered, lactose-free and made with A2 protein.
Their chocolate milk also has 14 grams of protein, no added sugar and no carrageenan, making it a convenient option when you want something your kids will be excited to drink.
Easy Lunch and Dinner Proteins
3. Little Spoon Super Chicken Dippers
Little Spoon Super Chicken Dippers are made with chicken breast plus hidden veggies and plant foods, including chickpeas, carrots, quinoa, cauliflower, kale and chia seeds. They are oven-baked in avocado oil and made without seed oils, milk, eggs, nuts or soy.
Pair them with fruit, organic cheese and crackers for an easy lunch at home, or heat them in the morning and pack them in a preheated insulated food container for school.
4. Nature Raised Farms Lightly Breaded Chicken Nuggets
These chicken nuggets are made with white-meat chicken raised without antibiotics and provide 15 grams of protein per five-piece serving. They are made without seed oils and are also gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free.
They are a helpful freezer staple for quick lunches, simple dinners or those extra-busy afternoons when you still want to get a solid source of protein on the plate.
5. GOODLES Mac and Cheese
GOODLES is a better take on a classic kid favorite. Its mac and cheese contains protein, prebiotic fiber, real cheese and nutrients from plant ingredients such as broccoli, spinach, kale and pumpkin.
Serve it in an insulated container for school lunch, or keep a few boxes on hand for a fast after-school meal. You can also add chicken, peas or broccoli to make it more filling.
Better Lunchbox Crunchy Snacks
6. Cadootz Extra Virgin Olive Oil Crackers
Cadootz makes the crunchy, cheesy crackers kids love using extra virgin olive oil instead of the seed oils found in many conventional crackers. Target carries flavors including Cheddar, Sea Salt and Ranch, and you may also find convenient individual packs.
Pair them with organic cheese, turkey or hummus for a more balanced snack.
7. Simple Mills Sweet Thins
Simple Mills Sweet Thins are a fun, lightly sweet lunchbox treat made from a seed-and-nut flour blend that includes watermelon seed, cashew, sunflower seed and flax. They are sweetened with coconut sugar and made without grains, gluten, dairy, soy, gums or emulsifiers.
Target carries Honey Cinnamon and Chocolate Brownie flavors, including convenient Honey Cinnamon snack packs. They do contain cashews and coconut and are produced on shared equipment, so always check the package and your school’s allergen policy.
Easy Protein Snacks and Lunch Staples
8. True Story and Applegate Hot Dogs
For a cleaner take on a kid classic, look for True Story Organic Grass-Fed Beef Hot Dogs and Applegate Organic Grass-Fed Uncured Beef Hot Dogs. These options are made with organic, grass-fed beef and skip the artificial ingredients found in many conventional hot dogs.
True Story also makes mini beef hot dogs that are a fun size for kids. Serve them at home for a quick lunch, or slice cooked hot dogs lengthwise and pack them in a preheated insulated container. Hot dogs can be a choking hazard for young children, so always cut them appropriately for your child’s age.
9. Fage Greek Yogurt
Plain or lower-sugar Greek yogurt is a versatile, protein-rich option for breakfast or snacks. Add berries, cinnamon or a little honey at home, or pack it in a leakproof container with an ice pack.
10. Perfect Bars
Perfect Bars are refrigerated protein bars made with recognizable, whole-food ingredients. They can be helpful for older kids who need something more substantial after school or before sports.
Most varieties contain peanuts or other nuts, so check the label and your school’s nut policy before putting one in a lunchbox.
Fruit-Based Snacks
11. That’s It Fruit Bars
That’s It bars are made with fruit and nothing else. They are easy to keep in a backpack or lunchbox and are a simple alternative to conventional fruit snacks with added sweeteners, dyes or artificial flavors.
12. BEAR Fruit Rolls
BEAR fruit rolls are made from whole-fruit purees and juices without added sugar. Kids still get the fun, roll-up format, but with a much simpler ingredient list.
13. Solely Organic Fruit Snacks
Solely offers organic dried-fruit snacks made without added sugar or preservatives. These are another convenient shelf-stable choice for lunches, travel or sports bags.
Dried fruit can be sticky and is more concentrated than fresh fruit, so I like to rotate it with fresh options and serve water alongside it.
Breakfast and Sandwich Staples
14. Dave’s Killer Organic Bread
Dave’s Killer Bread is made with organic whole grains, and several varieties provide a helpful combination of fiber and protein. Use it for sandwiches, avocado toast or a quick breakfast with eggs.
Check the nutrition label because the amount of added sugar varies between varieties. The thin-sliced options can also be a nice size for smaller kids.
15. Organic Frozen Berries
Frozen berries are an easy way to add fruit to smoothies, oatmeal or yogurt without worrying about them going bad before you use them. Keep a bag in the freezer for fast school-morning breakfasts.
Easy Back-to-School Lunchbox Combinations
You do not need to make elaborate lunches every morning. Start with a protein, add a fruit or veggie, include a satisfying carbohydrate and finish with a little extra your child enjoys.
- Little Spoon Chicken Dippers + Cadootz crackers + berries + cucumber slices
- Turkey and cheese on Dave’s Killer Bread + cucumber slices + That’s It fruit bar
- GOODLES mac and cheese + Nature Raised Farms chicken nuggets + peas
- Fage Greek yogurt + berries + Simple Mills Sweet Thins
- Sliced True Story mini hot dogs + Cadootz crackers + apple slices + carrots
For perishable foods, use an insulated lunch bag with cold packs. Hot foods should go into a properly preheated insulated container. Always adjust food size and texture for your child’s age, and follow your school’s allergy rules.
Final Thoughts
Back-to-school food does not have to be perfect, homemade or complicated. It is about finding realistic options that make busy mornings easier while still giving your kids quality protein, fiber and recognizable ingredients.
