Ice cream is still dessert, but that doesn’t mean it needs to contain seed oils, artificial dyes, corn syrup, gums, fillers and a long list of ingredients you barely recognize.
When I’m shopping for a cleaner frozen treat, I look for simple ingredients such as milk, cream, eggs, fruit, cacao and natural sweeteners. Organic or grass-fed dairy is an added bonus.
Here are some of the cleanest ice creams and popsicles I’ve found.

The Cleanest Traditional Ice Creams
Ice Cream for Bears
This may be one of the cleanest traditional ice cream brands on the market. Ice Cream for Bears uses grass-fed dairy from regenerative farms, egg yolks and raw, unfiltered honey instead of refined sugar.
The recipes are also made without gums, seed oils or artificial ingredients. Even the more exciting flavors use ingredients such as dates, butter, cacao, fruit and coconut oil instead of conventional cookie pieces and syrups.
A few flavors include Queen & Bean Vanilla Bean, Chocturnal Triple Chocolate, Mint to Bee Mint Chip, Bearista Coffee Cacao Nib and Strawbeary.
For example, Queen & Bean Vanilla is made with milk, cream, raw honey, skim milk, egg yolk, pure vanilla extract and vanilla bean. It truly doesn’t get much simpler than that. See Ice Cream for Bears’ flavors and ingredients.
Straus Family Creamery Organic Ice Cream
Straus Family Creamery makes rich, traditional ice cream using certified-organic dairy and simple ingredients.
Its Vanilla Bean flavor contains only organic cream and nonfat milk, organic cane sugar, organic egg yolks, organic vanilla extract and real ground vanilla bean. There are no gums, fillers, artificial colors or artificial preservatives.
Other flavors include Dutch Chocolate, Mint Chip and Strawberry. As always, the simplest flavors generally have the shortest ingredient lists. See the Straus Vanilla Bean ingredients.
Important 2026 update: Straus voluntarily recalled specific production lots of select ice cream flavors in May 2026 because of possible metal fragments. The recall did not include every Straus product, but check the flavor, size and best-by date against the official FDA recall notice before eating a container purchased around that time.
Alec’s Ice Cream
Alec’s is another super-clean brand worth looking for.
The company uses organic A2 dairy from grass-fed cows, cage-free eggs and regenerative organic cane sugar. Its ice creams are gum-free, seed-oil-free and made without artificial or natural flavors, artificial colors or traditional emulsifiers.
Tahitian Vanilla is an especially simple choice, but the brand also makes flavors such as Groundwork Coffee, Pistachio Crunch and Mint Fudge Brownie.
Some of the more elaborate flavors naturally have longer ingredient lists, but the brand’s overall standards are excellent. Learn more about Alec’s ingredients and standards.
A Solid Option Available at Most Grocery Stores
Häagen-Dazs Simple-Ingredient Flavors
Not every Häagen-Dazs product has an equally clean ingredient list, so you still need to read the label. However, several of its classic flavors are surprisingly simple and widely available.
The best options include Vanilla, Chocolate, Coffee and Strawberry.
The Coffee flavor, for example, contains only cream, skim milk, cane sugar, egg yolks and coffee. The Chocolate flavor contains cream, skim milk, cane sugar, cocoa and egg yolks.
Skip the more elaborate flavors with cookies, candy pieces, sauces or coated mix-ins if you want the shortest ingredient list. See Häagen-Dazs Coffee Ice Cream.
The Cleanest Dairy-Free Ice Cream
Frönen
Frönen is my top dairy-free ice cream pick because its pints are made with remarkably short ingredient lists.
The brand uses ingredients such as coconut cream, fruit, cacao, honey or coconut sugar. Its products are dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, seed-oil-free and made without gums, refined sugar or artificial ingredients.
The Chocolate pint contains only coconut cream, honey, water and cocoa powder. Madagascar Vanilla is made with coconut cream, water, honey and vanilla extract.
A few flavors include Madagascar Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry and Mint Chip. Explore Frönen’s dairy-free pints.
Solid Organic Dairy-Free Option: Cosmic Bliss
Cosmic Bliss makes certified-organic coconut milk ice cream without artificial ingredients. It is a solid organic option, but I wouldn’t rank it quite as highly as Frönen because its coconut milk base contains guar gum.
Its Madagascar Vanilla Bean flavor is made with organic coconut milk, coconut syrup, coconut cream, vanilla extract and vanilla beans. See the full ingredient list.
Cleaner Ice Cream Bars and Popsicles
Frönen Dessert Bars
Frönen also makes dairy-free dessert bars with the same clean standards as its pints: no refined sugar, gums, seed oils or artificial ingredients.
The Tropical Dessert Bars contain only coconut cream, mango, guava, honey and passion fruit. Other options include Pineapple Crème and Banana Chocolate. Explore Frönen’s dessert bars.
HoneyMoo Ice Cream Bars
HoneyMoo makes creamy dairy ice cream bars sweetened only with honey. The bars contain real milk, cream, egg yolks and ingredients such as vanilla, coffee or pistachios.
They’re dipped in a chocolate coating made with coconut oil and cacao. The coating does contain a small amount of sunflower lecithin and tapioca flour, so I wouldn’t call them absolutely perfect, but they are still a much cleaner alternative to most conventional chocolate-coated ice cream bars. See HoneyMoo’s ingredients.
Great Dye-Free Organic Options for Kids
These aren’t necessarily as minimal as the very cleanest fruit pops, but they’re much better swaps for conventional freezer pops filled with artificial dyes, flavors and sweeteners.
GoodPop
GoodPop offers organic and dye-free options made with real fruit or fruit juice. Look for its no-added-sugar fruit pops and Organic Freezer Pops.
Some varieties still contain natural flavors or guar gum, so check the individual label. The brand’s 100% fruit juice and no-added-sugar varieties are generally the best choices. Explore GoodPop fruit pops.
JonnyPops
JonnyPops makes fun, kid-friendly pops without artificial dyes. Its organic lineup includes Rainbow Fruit Stacks, Watermelon and Super Rainbow Minis.
The Organic Super Rainbow Minis are made with fruit juice concentrate, contain no added sugar and use no stevia or monk fruit. These are a solid swap when your kids want a colorful treat that still feels fun. Explore JonnyPops flavors.
DeeBee’s Organics
DeeBee’s is another great brand to add for kids. Its Organic SuperFruit Freezie Pops are made with organic fruit juice and purée without added cane sugar, artificial sweeteners or artificial dyes.
They’re also free from the top nine major allergens, making them convenient for parties and playdates. See DeeBee’s Organic Freezie Pops.
Chloe’s Fruit Pops
Chloe’s Fruit Pops aren’t organic and do contain added cane sugar, but their ingredient lists are incredibly straightforward.
The Mango flavor contains only mango purée, water and cane sugar. Strawberry is similarly made with strawberry purée, water and cane sugar. I would consider these a simple, solid option when the cleanest organic brands aren’t available.
Best of the Best Fruit Popsicles
Sweet Nothings Smoothie Pops
Sweet Nothings makes some of the cleanest fruit pops on the market. They’re made with organic fruit, dates, vegetables, chia seeds and lemon juice, with no refined sugar or artificial ingredients.
A few flavors include Strawberry Beet, Banana Berry and Mango Carrot.
For example, the Strawberry Beet flavor contains only organic strawberries, bananas, dates, beets, ground chia seeds and lemon juice. These feel more like a frozen whole-fruit smoothie than a traditional sugar-filled popsicle. Explore Sweet Nothings Smoothie Pops.
My Final Take
Ice cream doesn’t need to be treated like a health food to be made with better ingredients.
For traditional ice cream, my top choices are Ice Cream for Bears, Straus Family Creamery and Alec’s. Frönen is my clear winner for dairy-free ice cream, while Sweet Nothings makes some of the very best whole-fruit pops for kids.
When those aren’t available, simple Häagen-Dazs flavors, GoodPop, JonnyPops, DeeBee’s and Chloe’s are all solid alternatives.
And remember, honey, coconut sugar and cane sugar are still forms of added sugar. The goal isn’t perfection or unlimited portions. It’s choosing a delicious treat made with simpler, higher-quality ingredients when you can.
