My oldest just turned 4 years old, and I honestly think this might be my favorite age yet.

He’s old enough to get excited about every little detail—from decorating to singing Happy Birthday—but still young enough that the simple things feel absolutely magical.

This year we celebrated with a Ninja Turtle-themed birthday party, and instead of spending days making everything from scratch, I kept things simple with a few healthier shortcuts. The day ended up being perfect, and Dom absolutely loved every minute of it.

If you’re planning your own Ninja Turtle birthday party, I’m sharing everything we used—from the decorations to the cake, frosting, fun green lemonade, and easy party food.

Easy Healthy Birthday Cake

Instead of making a cake completely from scratch, I used the Simple Mills Vanilla Cake Mix, which made the entire process so much easier while still using simple ingredients.

You’ll Need

  • 1 box Simple Mills Vanilla Cake Mix
  • Ingredients listed on the box
  • One 8- or 9-inch round cake pan (I simply baked one layer at a time using the same pan.)

Directions

  1. Prepare the cake batter according to the package instructions.
  2. Bake one cake layer at a time using the same cake pan.
  3. Allow both layers to cool completely.
  4. Add frosting between the layers and frost the outside of the cake.

Easy Cream Cheese Frosting

This frosting comes together in just a few minutes and tastes so much better than store-bought frosting.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz organic cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup organic butter, softened
  • 2½–3 cups organic powdered sugar (depending on your desired sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½–1 teaspoon green spirulina powder

Directions

  1. Beat the butter and cream cheese until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Add the vanilla extract.
  3. Slowly mix in the powdered sugar until fully combined.
  4. Stir in a small amount of green spirulina until you reach your desired Ninja Turtle green.
  5. Frost your completely cooled cake.

I love using spirulina because it gives the frosting a fun green color without artificial food dyes.

Ninja Turtle “Sewer Ooze Punch”

This might have been the easiest party idea of the entire day.

Instead of making homemade lemonade, I simply poured Matt’s Organic Lemonade into a drink dispenser and whisked in a small amount of green spirulina until it turned bright green.

We labeled it “Sewer Ooze Punch,” and the kids thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Simple, fun, and no artificial food coloring needed.

Easy Birthday Party Food

I wanted food that everyone would enjoy without spending the whole party cooking.

Our menu was simple:

  • Katie’s frozen pizzas
  • Grass-fed frozen burgers from Costco

That’s it!

Everyone loved it, cleanup was easy, and it let us spend more time celebrating instead of standing in the kitchen.

My Favorite Frozen Pizzas

If you’re looking for frozen pizzas made with better ingredients, these are some of my favorites:

My Biggest Takeaway

Every year I’m reminded that kids don’t care if everything is Pinterest-perfect.

They remember singing Happy Birthday, running around with their friends, eating cake, opening presents, and feeling celebrated.

This birthday was simple, relaxed, and honestly one of my favorites yet.

I absolutely love this age. Four-year-olds are so interactive, full of personality, and get genuinely excited about every little detail. Watching Dom experience the day made all of it worth it.

Happy 4th birthday, Dom. 💚🐢
