By now you’ve probably seen the viral dot cake making its rounds on every corner of the internet. The colorful, sprinkle-coated little cakes are undeniably cute — and honestly, I needed to try them for myself. But if you know me, you know I can’t just follow a trend without putting my own spin on it. I wanted the same fun, eye-catching result using ingredients I actually feel good about serving my family. Spoiler: it worked, and they were a hit.

Why I love these ingredients:
- ✅ Dye-free
- ✅ High-fructose corn syrup free
- ✅ Made with ingredients you can actually trust
- ✅ Better for kids
- ✅ No artificial flavors or preservatives
What You’ll Need
- Simple Mills Chocolate Cake Mix
- Dye-Free Dot Sprinkles
- Kerrygold Butter
- Cream Cheese
- Cupcake Pan + Liners
Cream Cheese Frosting
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 2 to 3 cups organic powdered sugar (or 2 cups sugar & 2 tbsp maple syrup)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions
Step 1 — Bake the Cupcakes Make the Simple Mills cake mix according to the package directions and bake as cupcakes. Let them cool completely before moving on — this part is important, since frosting warm cupcakes will just make a melty mess.
Step 2 — Make the Frosting While the cupcakes cool, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy. Add the vanilla extract, then slowly mix in the powdered sugar a little at a time until the frosting is fluffy and spreadable. Start with 2 cups of powdered sugar and add more depending on your preferred sweetness and consistency.
Step 3 — Flip and Frost Once the cupcakes are fully cooled, peel off the liners and place each one upside down in a shallow bowl. This is what gives the dot cake its signature smooth, rounded shape. Frost the entire cupcake generously — top, bottom, and all the way around the sides. Don’t be shy with it.
Step 4 — Coat in Sprinkles Pour the dye-free dot sprinkles over the frosted cupcake, turning and pressing gently until every inch is covered. This is the most satisfying step, and also where kids can get involved if you want a little helper in the kitchen.
Step 5 — Chill and Serve Place the finished cupcakes in the fridge for about 30 minutes to let everything set. Then they’re ready to serve and show off.
The Result
These turned out every bit as fun and colorful as the viral version — just made with ingredients I feel better about. The Simple Mills mix keeps things cleaner on the cake side, the Kerrygold butter adds a richness to the frosting that you can really taste, and the dye-free sprinkles mean all the color without any of the artificial stuff. A win all around.
Whether you’re making these for a birthday, a weekend treat, or just because the trend called your name — I hope you love them as much as we did.
