Condiments are one of the sneakiest places added sugar, high fructose corn syrup, seed oils, and unnecessary additives love to hide.

You can clean up your meals, buy better protein, load up on veggies, and then accidentally squeeze a sauce loaded with high fructose corn syrup right on top. It happens to all of us.

The good news is there are actually so many better options now. Whether you’re grilling, meal prepping, packing lunches, or just trying to make healthier swaps for your family, these are some of my favorite condiment and BBQ upgrades for 2026.

What to Look For in Healthier Condiments

Before we get into the swaps, here are a few things I always check on the label:

Avoid when possible:

High fructose corn syrup
Soybean oil
Canola oil
Cottonseed oil
Artificial sweeteners
Artificial colors
Caramel color
Long ingredient lists full of additives

Look for:

Avocado oil
Extra virgin olive oil
Organic ingredients
No added sugar or lower sugar options
Whole food sweeteners like dates or honey
Short ingredient lists
No high fructose corn syrup

You don’t have to be perfect. Just start with the condiment you use the most and upgrade from there.

BBQ Sauce

Worst: Sweet Baby Ray’s and Kraft Original BBQ

Many conventional BBQ sauces have high fructose corn syrup as the first or second ingredient. One serving can have around 12 to 15 grams of added sugar, and let’s be honest, most people use more than one serving.

Better: Stubb’s Original

Stubb’s is a better grocery store option because it does not contain high fructose corn syrup and is easy to find at most stores.

Best: Primal Kitchen BBQ Sauce or Date Lady BBQ Sauce

These are both cleaner options without seed oils or unnecessary junk.

Date Lady BBQ Sauce: https://urlgeni.us/amazon/1fR3mH

Date Lady uses dates as a whole food sweetener, which is the kind of swap I’m here for.

Mayonnaise

Worst: Hellmann’s and Kraft Mayo

Most conventional mayo is made with soybean oil, which is one of the most common highly processed seed oils in packaged foods.

Best: Primal Kitchen Mayo or Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayo

Both are made with 100% avocado oil and skip the canola, soybean, and other seed oils.

Primal Kitchen comes in a glass jar and has a simple ingredient list. Chosen Foods is also widely available and super clean.

Budget tip: Costco often carries Primal Kitchen mayo in a 32-ounce jar for around $9.49, which is a great deal compared to many grocery stores.

Ketchup

Worst: Heinz Original and Hunt’s Tomato Ketchup

These can contain high fructose corn syrup and added sugar, which is two hits in one bottle.

Better: 365 Organic Ketchup or Annie’s Organic Ketchup

These are easy to find, budget-friendly, and made without high fructose corn syrup.

Best: Primal Kitchen Ketchup

Primal Kitchen Ketchup is sweetened with balsamic vinegar and has no added sugar or seed oils.

Ranch

Worst: Hidden Valley Ranch

The base is soybean oil, and the ingredient list is much longer than it needs to be.

Best: Chosen Foods Ranch or Primal Kitchen Ranch

Both use avocado oil and still give you that creamy, tangy ranch flavor without the inflammatory oils.

Buffalo Sauce

Worst: Sweet Baby Ray’s Wing Sauce and Kinder’s Wing Sauce

These can contain seed oils and added sugars, which is not what I want in a buffalo sauce.

Better: Noble Made Buffalo Sauce

Noble Made has a cleaner label and is widely available.

Best: Primal Kitchen Buffalo Sauce

Primal Kitchen Buffalo Sauce has no seed oils and no sugar. Use it on wings, salads, bowls, or as a dip.

Chick-fil-A Style Sauce

Worst: The Actual Chick-fil-A Sauce Packet

The classic sauce packet contains soybean oil and added sugars.

Best: Primal Kitchen Chicken Dippin’ Sauce

This has that same sweet, tangy, smoky flavor but with a much cleaner ingredient list.

Steak Sauce

Worst: A1 Sauce

A1 contains high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, and a long list of additives.

Best: Primal Kitchen Steak Sauce

This is a cleaner swap with bold flavor and simple ingredients. Your steak deserves better.

Other Cleaner Condiment Brands Worth Knowing

Yellow Bird Hot Sauces are a great clean-label option if you like heat.

Primal Kitchen Condiment Sets are also a great way to try a few cleaner swaps at once, especially if you’re just getting started.

Healthier BBQ Swaps

Condiments are only one part of the equation. If you’re grilling or hosting a BBQ, here are a few easy swaps that make a big difference.

Hot Dogs

Worst: Oscar Mayer and Ball Park

Many conventional hot dogs can contain fillers, by-products, preservatives, and added nitrates or nitrites.

Best: Teton Waters Ranch or Applegate Organics

Teton Waters Ranch hot dogs are made with 100% grass-fed beef, are uncured, and have no added nitrates or nitrites.

Applegate Organics is another great option. They use grass-fed beef, pasture-raised practices, and are certified humane with no added nitrites.

What to look for on the label:

Uncured
No added nitrates or nitrites
Grass-fed when possible
Short ingredient list
No fillers

Burgers

Worst: Ball Park Frozen Burgers and Many Pre-Made Patties

A lot of pre-made patties can contain fillers, preservatives, and lower-quality beef.

Best: 100% Grass-Fed Ground Beef

Fresh 100% grass-fed ground beef is one of the easiest BBQ upgrades.

Grass-Fed Ground Beef: https://urlgeni.us/amazon/VgTHar

Grass-fed beef can have a better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio compared to conventional beef, and it tastes amazing too.

You can usually find it at Whole Foods, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target, or your local butcher.

Buns

Worst: King’s Hawaiian Rolls and Ball Park Buns

These can contain high fructose corn syrup, enriched flour, seed oils, and preservatives.

Better: Dave’s Killer Bread Buns

Dave’s Killer Bread buns are USDA Organic, Non-GMO, made without high fructose corn syrup, and easy to find at most grocery stores.

Best: Against the grain hamburger buns

These are organic, made without seed oils, and have a cleaner ingredient list.

Against the grain hamburger buns: https://urlgeni.us/amazon/LgqGNP

Lower carb option: Use lettuce wraps or Siete grain-free tortillas as a bun swap.

Cheese

Worst: Kraft Singles

Kraft Singles are not the same as real cheese. They are a pasteurized process cheese product and contain less than 51% actual cheese, with the rest coming from ingredients like milk, whey, emulsifiers, and additives.

Best: Organic Valley American Cheese or Raw Cheddar Slices

Organic Valley American Cheese: https://urlgeni.us/amazon/sCQMLp

Look for real cheese with simple ingredients. Organic American cheese, raw cheddar, or grass-fed cheddar slices are all great options.

Start With One Swap

You do not have to swap everything at once.

Start with the condiment you use most, whether that’s ketchup, mayo, ranch, or BBQ sauce. Once that becomes normal, move on to the next one.

Healthy eating is not about perfection. It’s about learning how to read labels, making better choices when you can, and knowing that small swaps add up over time.

The ingredient list never lies.
