A fun Easter treat made with simple, real ingredients
There’s something about peanut butter + chocolate that just hits every time… especially around Easter.
But here’s the thing—most store-bought peanut butter eggs (yes, even the popular ones) are made with a long list of ultra-processed ingredients that don’t need to be there.
So instead of skipping the treat altogether, I made a better version at home… and turned it into a fun activity with my son, Dom 🥹
Same nostalgic flavor. Way simpler ingredients.
What’s Actually in Conventional Peanut Butter Eggs?
Let’s take a quick look at something like Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs.
While they taste good, the ingredient list includes things like:
- TBHQ (a synthetic preservative used to extend shelf life)
- PGPR (an emulsifier used to reduce cost and improve texture)
- Artificial flavors
- Refined sugars and highly processed oils
These ingredients aren’t there for your health—they’re there for long shelf life, texture, and mass production.
For example, TBHQ (tertiary butylhydroquinone) is a petroleum-derived preservative often used in processed foods to prevent fats from going rancid. It’s allowed in small amounts, but it’s not something you’d ever add to food in your own kitchen.
And that’s really the difference.
Why Make Them at Home?
When you make these yourself, you get:
- Simple, real food ingredients
- No preservatives or artificial additives
- Better fats (depending on your chocolate + peanut butter)
- A fun activity to do with your kids
And honestly… they taste just as good (if not better).
Peanut Butter Chocolate Eggs Recipe
2/3 cup peanut butter
1 tablespoon maple syrup
2 1/2 tablespoons coconut flour (you may need a little more depending on your peanut butter)
1/2 to 3/4 cup chocolate chips
1 teaspoon coconut oil
Flaky sea salt
Mix the peanut butter, maple syrup, and coconut flour until it forms a dough. If it’s too soft, add a little more coconut flour until it holds its shape.
Form into egg shapes and place on parchment paper on a plate or baking sheet.
Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes, or until firm.
Melt the chocolate chips with the coconut oil until smooth.
Dip each egg into the chocolate, using a fork to lift and let the excess drip off.
Place back onto parchment paper, sprinkle with flaky sea salt, and refrigerate until set.
