Non-Toxic Household Swaps at Target

Target has seriously stepped it up when it comes to better household and personal care finds. While not everything on the shelves is perfect, there are some really solid swaps that can help you reduce unnecessary toxins in your home without making things complicated.

From cleaning products to bandages to period care and sunscreen, these are some of my favorite non-toxic household swaps at Target right now.

1. Branch Basics Cleaning Products

Branch Basics is one of my favorite finds at Target because they make human-safe cleaning products that actually work.

A lot of conventional cleaning products can contain harsh fragrances, dyes, questionable preservatives, and ingredients you probably don’t want sprayed all over your countertops, dishes, or laundry.

Branch Basics keeps it much simpler. Their products are fragrance-free and made with plant and mineral-based ingredients.

A great swap for conventional laundry detergent, especially if you’re trying to avoid synthetic fragrance, optical brighteners, dyes, and other unnecessary additives.

Branch Basics Dishwasher Detergent Tablets
These are a big win because they are microplastic-free and made without plastic film or PVA coating. Most people don’t think about what’s in their dishwasher tabs, but those little pods can be another sneaky source of ingredients you may not want rinsing around your plates, cups, and utensils.

Their concentrate is super versatile and can be used for everyday cleaning around the home.

2. Better Bandages: Welly

Another Target swap I love is upgrading your bandages.

This might not be the first thing you think about when switching to less toxic products, but it matters. Bandages go directly on your skin, and often over cuts, scrapes, or open wounds.

Recent testing has raised concerns that some adhesive bandages may contain PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.” PFAS are used in some products for water-resistant or grease-resistant properties, but they’re not something I want near an open wound if I can avoid it.

At Target, Welly is a better bandage option to look for. They also make cute kid-friendly designs, which makes the swap even easier if you have little ones.

When shopping for bandages, look for options that are:

PFAS-conscious or tested when possible
Free from unnecessary dyes or coatings
Gentle on skin
Made with simpler materials
From brands that are more transparent

This is one of those small swaps that adds up, especially if you have kids and go through bandages often.

3. Cleaner Feminine Care Products

For that time of the month, this is another area where ingredients matter.

Tampons and pads are used on some of the most absorbent and sensitive areas of the body, so I like to keep things as simple as possible.

For tampons, look for:

100% organic cotton
Fragrance-free
Chlorine-free
Dye-free

For pads and liners, look for:

100% organic cotton topsheet or liner
Fragrance-free
Chlorine-free
Dye-free
No unnecessary synthetic coatings

Target carries several better options, including brands like Cora, L., and The Honey Pot, depending on your store.

You do not have to overthink every single product, but switching to organic cotton period care is an easy upgrade that can reduce exposure to pesticides, fragrance, dyes, and other unnecessary ingredients.

4. Mineral Sunscreen: Blue Lizard

This year, we are swapping more chemical-based sunscreens for mineral-based sunscreens.

Mineral sunscreens use ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to help protect your skin from the sun. These sit on top of the skin and physically block UV rays, while chemical sunscreens use ingredients that absorb into the skin and convert UV rays into heat.

At Target, one of the better sunscreen options is Blue Lizard.

Is it perfect? No. But it is a better option compared to many conventional sunscreens, especially if you’re looking for a mineral-based formula that is easy to find.

When shopping for sunscreen, look for:

Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients
Fragrance-free when possible
Broad spectrum protection
SPF 30 or higher
A formula your family will actually use

Because the best sunscreen is the one you’ll apply consistently.
